One of the wild card slots for next week's SAA Open was decided at Westridge Park Tennis Stadium in Durban this weekend.

Heinrich Heyl, the third seed at the Wild Card Tournament, beat number one seed Pieter Calitz 7-6 (15-13) 4-6 7-5 in yesterday's thrilling final played in front of a handful of onlookers.

Iain Smith, tournament referee, said it was the first time the South African Tennis Association (Sata) hosted a wild card tournament.

He said the 32-draw tournament was open to any local player over the age of 16, with 28 players, many of them juniors, starting out on Friday afternoon.

"The other wild card is Izak van der Merwe, who won the SAA National Champs at Wanderers in Johannesburg," said Smith. "We are still left with two wild cards. We will see if any of the early losers at the Australian Open are coming to play."
