About 800 school-leavers began training yesterday to help short-staffed nurses in the Eastern Cape.

"They will help with non-clinical activities and will [work at] clinics and hospitals," said provincial Health Department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo.

The department is spending R45million on the two-year learnerships. Each student will receive a uniform and a monthly allowance of R1 500.

The students will be deployed at clinics, hospitals and community health centres. - Sapa
