Good riddance, viewers say

Good actors and actresses come and go like a season in the popular SABC1 soapie Generations.

However, in the case of Rantebeng Makapan, who plays the character of Thomas Mashaba in the series, it seems as if it is good riddance as far as viewers are concerned.

His departure in March will perhaps disappoint only a few people. Granted, he was a good actor in the South African feature film Max and Mona, but in Generations he is less than convincing, and is pretentious and completely lost.

This is the opinion of those who follow the country's most popular soapie.

But the soapie's producer, Mfundi Vundla, remains convinced that Makapan is a good actor and that his contribution was noted.

"We all enjoyed Rantebeng's role as Thomas Mashaba. The character was created to help introduce the Mashaba family, which is now an established force in the series," Vundla said yesterday.

Makapan confirmed to Sowetan yesterday that he will not renew his contract when it expires in March.

But he will still be seen in the series until June.

"Generations has provided me with an opportunity and I'm happy and encouraged about what it did to my career," he said.
