The exam results of more than 500 students, withheld because they had not paid their tuition fees, were released yesterday.
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) students from poor families had contracts with the National Students' Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to pay their fees. But the scheme reportedly ran out of money.
The good news emerged at yesterday's meeting between students, parents and the institution's management.
The meeting was called by the students after an increase in DUT's registration fees from R1700 last year to R2000 this year.
Though the students are unhappy about the increase, they were overjoyed to hear that the their results were to be released.
SRC spokesman Mthunzi Gumede said R2000 was too much.
"The management has until later this week to come up with a solution. If not, we will begin to protest on Monday," he said.
Gumede said students who are expected to register by early this week and can afford to do so should go ahead.
Those who cannot afford the new fees should consult the SRC or wait for the outcome of negotiations, he said.
The university management could not be reached for comment.
