A new, hard-hitting drama series, Society, is set to cause a stir in the television industry.
The mini-drama starts on Thursday at 9pm on SABC1.
It features the best of local actors, including Bongani Masondo, Sibulele Gcilitshana and Lele Ledwaba.
Written and produced by Makgano Mamabolo and Lodi Matsitela, Society is about the suicide of a young woman, Dineo. Her four friends, who had drifted apart over the years, are brought together by her death to help her mother with the funeral.
Society is set in the urban jungle of post-apartheid South Africa. It takes place in Johannesburg, where many South Africans and other Africans arrive hoping to realise their dreams.
It's a new era in a country full of opportunity, where everyone is for himself and humanity is a catchword more popular with the white population.
Mamabolo said: "During the apartheid era, black communities set up informal saving schemes, known as societies, to help one another bury their loved ones. The name of the series is derived from these schemes."
Society examines the dilemma young successful black women face balancing respect for the customs and traditions of old and being independent, self- sufficient women who can afford their own funeral plans.
What traits do they carry over from their upbringing? How do they achieve happiness in these empowered positions, and so on.
