Bafana training team a mystery

The South African Football Association (Safa) is in the dark as to who will make up the 30-member Bafana Bafana training squad when new coach Carlos Alberto Parreira assembles the team on February 6 or 7.

Safa chief executive Raymond Hack could only guess what will happen at the camp earmarked for Johannesburg.

"I think he [Parreira] will invite players who have been with Bafana Bafana, those he has seen and those he has heard of," Hack said yesterday.

"Safa has not set any guidelines. Fortunately, though, he arrives in the country on the 25th [of January], when the executive committee will be meeting.

"He will attend that meeting to update the executive on the way forward and also meet the management committee to set goals and targets," said the famous lawyer.

Parreira is on record as saying that the 2010 team will be made up of players who are currently under 20, but he is unlikely to bring in a bunch of youngsters in one fell swoop.

The Premier Soccer League has obliged the World Cup winning Brazilian's request for a reserve league.

Veteran administrator Dan Leboa has been brought back from retirement to run the league, which is expected to be regional.

Hack also promised that there will be no confusion about who the new coach will report to. There have been suggestions that Parreira should operate from the Safa commercial wing's offices.

"The commercial wing deals with commercial matters - your marketing, public relations and advertising of Bafana Bafana," he explained.

"The wing is a sub-structure of the association and CAF [Confederation of African Football] and Fifa [Federation of International Football Associations] deal directly with associations.

"Safa will still be responsible for call-ups, fixtures and everything involving the team," Hack said yesterday.
