Sipho Sepamla was born in West Rand Consolidated Mines Township outside Krugersdorp in Gauteng.

He trained as a teacher at Pretoria Normal College. He has published six collections of poetry, ending with Selected Works in 1984 and From Goree to Soweto in 1988.

Sepamla's novels included The Root Is One in 1979, A Ride on the Whirlwind in 1981 and Rainbow Journey in 1996.

In 1976 he was co-recipient with Lionel Abrahams of the Pringle Award and in 1985 he received the Order of Arts and Literature from France. Sepamla actively encouraged art and culture in South Africa.

His creative energies were awoken by the Black Consciousness philosophy. His poetry collection, Hurry Up to It!, was published in 1975.
