The Education Department is losing it. I don't agree with Panyaza Lesufi that jeans, takkies and T-shirts should replace uniforms. I would agree if the attire is in school colours and made specifically for schools.

A school uniform displays similarity, unity, stability and equality. It distinguishes a pupil at one school from one at another school. Education goes beyond the school uniform, as Lesufi puts it, but the two complement each other.

If the department believes that uniforms are too expensive, it should subsidise them. It would help parents a lot.
