Residents to oppose bail

Members of the community have vowed to make impossible the bail application by a suspected murderer who is accused of killing his former girlfriend and burying her in a grave in his policeman brother's back garden.

Mandla Mathebula, 22, is expected to apply for bail in the Mhala magistrates' court today in connection with the shocking death of his former girlfriend, Advice Mashaba, on December 26.

"We have agreed that members of the community from at least seven neighbouring villages will protest against the suspect's bail application on Friday," said a member of the Songeni Concerned Group, Gift Tshovedi.

"We are going to make it impossible for the suspect to be granted bail because he is facing a very special case that no one could have thought of," said Tshovedi.

Mashaba, from Songeni village, is said to have gone with her new boyfriend on Christmas Day, only to return the next morning at about 4am. She was, however, not aware that her former boyfriend, Mathebula, was apparently waiting for her return and allegedly hiding in the shadows.

Mathebula allegedly ambushed Mashaba and assaulted her as soon as she arrived, but a girl who walked past saw the alleged attack.
