On Wednesday Deon du Toit, a colleague, said Eva had received death threats on Sunday and on Monday.

"I asked him if he wanted me to go with him, but he said it was just a meeting. He said he would see me in an hour."

When Eva did not return by 1pm, Du Toit drove to the meeting place.

Du Toit said he was "bitter" about the incident. He said he had spearheaded the building of a school with computers and two qualified teachers for the community.

"In my heart I am asking what was it worth?"

Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana said: "Any loss of life is one death too many.

"Violence from any quarter of our society and whatever the circumstances must be condemned in the strongest terms."
