A 33-year-old Ngwavuma regional court public prosecutor accused of defrauding the court has been suspended.

Dumsani Makhaye was suspended on Wednesday after he appeared in court on allegations of fraudulently taking money from people with a promise that he would clear their outstanding traffic fines.

Investigations revealed that the money was never paid to the state coffers and no receipts were issued.

Makhaye was granted bail of R5000 and will appear in court again on January 18.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Lucinda Moonieya said: "We will not tolerate such practices and we hope that Makhaye's suspension and punishment he will face, if found guilty, will send a clear message to other NPA employees." - Sne Masuku
