AmaZulu registered a morale-boosting win when they pipped Ajax Cape Town in a Castle Premiership match at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, Durban, yesterday.
The result is a godsend for the trouble-torn Usuthu, who are fighting hard to move away from the relegation zone. AmaZulu, guided by Thabo Dladla and Reggie Shilembe, with Ted Dumitru serving as a technical director, made four changes to the team that went down 4-2 to Jomo Cosmos on Sunday.
The new starters were goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng, midfielder Bafo Biyela, defender Belux Kasonga and striker Dumisani Ngwenya.
AmaZulu created more scoring opportunities than the Urban Warriors but, as usual, seemed to suffer stage fright in front of goal.
Veteran John "Shoes" Moshoeu dictated terms in the middle of the park.
Ngwenya broke the deadlock in the 26th minute after he received a pass from Kasongo and fired a low shot that gave Ajax goalkeeper Hans Vonk no chance.
The second half saw a more determined Urban Warriors taking the game to the hosts but they found the Usuthu defence, led by Siphiwe Gwili, in an uncompromising mood.
AmaZulu supporters danced and chanted after the final whistle to celebrate the rare win.
In Tembisa, Lamontville Golden Arrows scored a well-deserved 1-0 win over Benoni Premier United at Mehlareng Stadium yesterday, reports Meshack Khotha.
The opening minutes of the game were entertaining and equally balanced as both sides attacked.
Arrows, spearheaded by Mabhuti Khenyeza, showed a sense of urgency in front of the Rabbits' goal. United striker Obinna Okafor and company were too casual, despite creating chances.
The visitors grabbed the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute when South African under-23 international Joseph Henyekane's cross was converted by Khenyeza.
His powerful header easily beat United's goalkeeper Nimrod Tsengwa in a game where Arrows' head coach Khabo Zondo was conspicuous by his absence.
Manqoba Mngqithi, Zondo's assistant, has been in charge of the struggling KwaZulu-Natal side's technical staff since last Sunday.
Arrows officials could not be reached for comment.
