At first it appeared that it was going to be a one-horse race. People trusted Zuma. Or, was it that many branches of the party and its youth league were just fed up with the current leadership and wanted a substitute?
With speculation that former Gauteng premier Tokyo Sexwale might be the likely compromise candidate to enter the succession race, it seems to me that this year is going to be shorter than people think.
But there is more to consider before we can put our trust in Sexwale, who is no longer an active politician. He hit the road soon after being fingered in the alleged plot to unseat Thabo Mbeki in 2001.
Sexwale ran off without any explanation to his followers. He went straight into business, where he won lucrative BEE deals and became one of the richest black men in the country.
He is a capitalist in a country that should have opted for socialism to deal with past inequalities.
As with all capitalists, his greed supersedes everything. Sexwale has to be updated on real politics after having been in business for so long.
Only time will tell if that can be achieved within a year.
