A new South African movie featuring a South African cast, has again proved that there is talent in the country and that the local film industry can hold its own, anywhere.
Faith like Potatoes, a mainly moral and religious story, was embraced by South African film audiences, if Christmas DVD sales and box office takings are anything to go by.
The award-winning South African film enjoyed sellout shows and DVD sales soared.
Faith like Potatoes is an extraordinary film about a man with an extraordinary faith.
It is inspired by the autobiography of Angus Buchan and was adapted for the big screen by Regardt van den Bergh. It tells the moving life story of a Zambian farmer of Scottish heritage, played by Frank Rautenbach.
The movie captures the life journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.
Producer Frans Cronje said: "Looking at other DVD sales for local films, we estimated that our initial 15000 would be enough. However, after only one week, the 15000 had sold out.
"When you consider that the average South African movie only sells between 1500 to 2000 DVDs in total, and we have already sold 18000 before the stock even landed, we are doing quite well.
"This proves once and for all that the South African market is happy to watch good moral content and that it is not only slapstick, sex and violence that sells."
Since its release in September, Global Creative Studios' first feature film has received wide acclaim both locally and abroad.
Internationally Faith like Potatoes contended in three prestigious film festivals and took home the people's choice award at the Sabaoth International Film Festival in Italy.
In South Africa more than 250000 moviegoers went to see the film in the first six weeks after its release, and it made R3,5million at the box office.
The movie's theme song, A New Day, is also enjoying wide support on radio stations countrywide.
Due to popular demand, the theme song is being sold as a ringtone through Christianmobile. co.za.
