The increasing international popularity of Toyota's latest-generation Yaris, known as the Vitz in Japan, will be extended when production of the car starts in China in the middle of next year.
The planned production of the Yaris for this new market is 80000 to 90000 a year.
The car market in China is diversifying as "motorisation" continues to pick up momentum. This has resulted in calls for compact vehicles that are more fuel efficient.
Toyota sees the Yaris as an ideal contender in this growing market.
The Yaris will be produced by Guangzhou Toyota Motor, a joint venture by Toyota Motor Corporation and Guangzhou Automobile, set up in 2004.
The modern factory in China employs 3500 people and has a production capacity of 200000 units a year.
Guangzhou Toyota started building the Camry in May and sales had exceeded the original target of 50000 units a year by 7000 units by the end of last year.
Toyota is the fastest-growing brand in China. Its sales jumped from 183000 in 2005 to more than 300000 last year.
Yaris will be the 10th Toyota vehicle to be manufactured in China. The other vehicles are Land Cruiser, Prius, Vios, Corolla, Crown, Reiz, Coaster, Prado and Camry.
