Metal plates strewn across the floor, cracked walls and shattered windows were the aftermath of yesterday's Absa ATM blast in Orlando West, Soweto.

The latest in a string of explosions at ATMs in Gauteng in the past fortnight, the Orlando blast was one of two that occurred yesterday morning.

In the other incident, a Standard Bank ATM was blown up in Wierdabrug in Pretoria. No money was taken and the suspects are still at large. The police are investigating.

The bombers forced open the door to the Orlando ATM using heavy equipment and cut the iron gate to gain entry to the "Cash Express" ATM. They then used the explosives to blow the automatic teller machine apart.

They escaped with an undisclosed amount of money and are still at large.
