No bail for axe murder accused

Sne Masuku

The bail application of a 27- year-old woman accused of killing her 19-year-old step- daughter with an axe and burning and burying her body was yesterday postponed to January 16.

Mavis Ntuli, of Ntuzuma Township in Durban, appeared in the Verulam magistrates' court on a charge of murder. Her bail application was postponed so that police could verify the new residential address to which she claims to have moved.

Ntuli, who is married to the deceased's father, was arrested in 2005, shortly after her step-daughter's death. She was later released after the court found the state's evidence to be inadequate. She was then rearrested before Christmas last year after police investigations led back to her.

It is alleged that Ntuli's step- daughter, who was staying with relatives in Mandeni after her biological mother's death, had visited her father, who was staying with Ntuli, in 2005 to ask for money to buy clothes.

The deceased's father allegedly gave her R200 before he left for work the next day.

Shortly after he left, after an argument between Ntuli and her step-daughter, Ntuli allegedly chopped the deceased with an axe before burning her body and throwing the remains into a toilet pit.
