A woman has appeared in the Kenton-on-Sea magistrates' court, near Grahamstown, charged with killing a man who allegedly attacked her on Monday.

An intruder confronted the woman, 39, at her house in Ekupumeleni township at 2.30am, Captain Mali Govender said.

"She said she heard a noise in her maize garden and went to investigate."

The man tried to stab her "but the knife fell and the woman grabbed it and stabbed the man".

The woman then ran towards nearby public phones but on the way came across local police and told her story.

When the police arrived at the woman's house they found the body of a man in his late 30s. The police arrested the woman.

She was granted R500 bail by the court and told to appear again on January 25.

Police investigations were continuing, Govender said. - Sapa
