Ratanang Ramakoka has always been careful not to sign up for contracts over the phone.

Ratanang Ramakoka has always been careful not to sign up for contracts over the phone.

But when an agent from African Life called her in October, she did not hesitate.

Ramakoka accepted the offer and gave all her details to the agent to process her application.

She only wanted one policy, but later discovered that she had two additional funeral policies at the same financial institution.

For three months she has been battling to cancel the policies and recoup her money, she said.

"The agreed monthly premium was R130, but they have debited three times as much," Ramakoka said.

The amount debited from her account has varied from R472 to R672 since the inception of these policies.

"I almost cried in December when I discovered that they deducted R672 from my account," Ramakoka said.

She said African Life promised to investigate her matter because they suspected that their agent committed fraud, but have done nothing to stop the debit order going through.

The policies have now been cancelled, but Ramakoka has not yet been refunded.

The company owes her R1616, she said.

Melvin Namazdunda at the African Life call centre said he was not in a position to comment but would get the company's spokesman to do so. No one had done so by the time of going to print.
