Capetonian Mari Rabi is one of the eight lucky triathletes worldwide to be awarded a scholarship to prepare for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Stephen Bourdeau, media manager of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), said 20-year-old Rabi was awarded the BG Scholarship.

"Mari has been doing well but lacked funding to make it possible for her to travel to the world races to earn qualifying points," said Bourdeau.

Triathletes who are awarded the scholarship receive special training from the best coaches and are also monitored regularly. Rabi, a two-time South African champion, finished 46th on the Olympic rankings last year.

Rabi said: "I feel really honoured to have been selected for the BG Scholarship, it's my ambition to represent South Africa at the 2008 Beijing and 2010 London Olympics."

Les McDonald, ITU president, said: "The scholarships are one of the many commendable results of our partnership with BG Group."
