Police search for man after two houses are set on fire

Sowetan Reporter

A North West man is being sought for allegedly destroying two houses - including his own - in Winterveldt, north of Pretoria, on Sunday.

The man, known as John Sunnyboy Chokwe, 42, allegedly set fire to his lover's house and then torched his own house.

According to Chokwe's former lover, Rosina Mvule, 52, she and Chokwe fell in love about three months ago.

Chokwe started abusing her from the beginning of this month, threatening to kill her if she left him.

She also claimed that Chokwe had kidnapped her a day before setting the houses on fire.

She said to make make matters worse, Chokwe had no known family or relatives and is suspected of being a foreigner.

"He kept me in his house, threatening to kill me with a knife. Luckily, he allowed me to go out to the toilet and I managed to escape at about 3am on Sunday.

"My six children's birth certificates and my ID have also been destroyed in the fire. The man is short and has a scar on the left side of his face," Mvule said.

Inspector Erica Roos, of the Marico police in North West, confirmed that a case of malicious damage to property and arson had been opened.

Roos said no arrest had been made yet.

She appealed to the public to contact their nearest police station if they spotted Chokwe.

She warned people not to approach Chokwe because he was dangerous.
