More than 160 golfers will be contesting for the 35 spots in the pre-qualifying rounds for the inaugural Joburg Open at Killarney and Kempton Park courses this morning.

Those who qualify will join the leading players in this lucrative Joburg tournament to be played at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club from Thursday to January 14.

Among players who will be competing in the pre-qualifying rounds are five amateur golfers who graduated from the Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay last weekend.

They are Mzwandile Sikobi from Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal, Heinie Bruiners from George in Western Cape, Johannes Mokoena from KwaThema in Springs, Jack Kutumane from Gugulethu and Mandisi Trongo from Pretoria.

Those who are likely to qualify in this tough 18-hole event are Bafana Hlophe, Irvin Mosate, Mahonga Nomwa, Lebohang Ramokhosi and Mahommed Tayob.
