Jacob "Cellular" Sakala got his coaching job at City Pillars off to a promising start when he guided Mathaithai to an authoritative 5-0 win over Western Province United on Sunday.

This one-sided Mvela Golden League fixture was played at NkowaNkowa Stadium, near Tzaneen.

Sakala was roped in by Pillars last week after he was fired by neighbours Dynamos.

The appointment of the affable and much-travelled Zambian mentor, who replaced Mike Muendane, was confirmed by Pillars' new boss Mario Morfou yesterday.

"We are happy with the way Sakala started his job at the team and we hope his experience will benefit the club," said Morfou, who bought Pillars with his brother George last month.

He said they intended to bring in new players to fortify the squad during this month's transfer window.

Struggling PJ Stars also started the new year on a positive note with a 3-2 success over title chasers Fidentia Rangers in Meadowlands in another tie played on Sunday.

Winnerspark lived up to their name when they claimed the scalps of OR Tambo District Cosmos at Walter Sisulu University Stadium.

Other results of matches played on Saturday: Durban Stars 6, Witbank Spurs 3; Bay United 1, Dynamos 0; Vasco da Gama 1, FC AK 1; GaRankuwa United 0, Nathi Lions 0.
