KINSHASA - The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kinshasa, Cardinal Frederic Etsou, has died in Belgium, his archdiocese announced yesterday.

Cardinal Etsou, 77, who died at a hospital in Brussels, had been receiving treatment for diabetes.

Etsou had been archbishop of Kinshasa since 1991.

He served at his post throughout years of turbulence in the vast central African state.

President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo expressed his condolences, praising the archbishop's sense of duty, which had "served as an inspiration to all Christians".
