Top South African runner Hedrick Ramaala has started in earnest with preparations for the Flora London Marathon scheduled for April.

"That is my main target for the first part of this year," said Ramaala, 34, who finished a credible third in 2004 and 2005 at the same event.

"I have a clear picture of what to expect this year and will be going all out for top position. There is nothing impossible in life. Winning the London marathon and an Olympic medal are the two main things that I have been working on. I will have peace of mind after achieving the feat.

"The organisers of the London Marathon will start announcing the names of the top athletes in the next three of four weeks."

After the London marathon, Ramaala will be heading to Japan for the World Championships in Athletics in August.

"I will do the marathon at the championships which will form part of my final preparations for the Olympics in China in 2008. As usual, the year's programme will end with the New York Marathon, though my manager (John Bicourt) still has to talk to the organisers."

Locally, Ramaala is still undecided but is contemplating doing the 10 000m at the Athletics South Africa Challenge in Port Elizabeth on February 9 for training purposes.

"I will also be in Port Elizabeth to support some of my training partners who will compete in the Nedbank South African Marathon Championships on February 10."
