A Soweto mob killed a man and injured another after accusing them of burglary yesterday.

The men, identified as Mozambicans, aged 23 and 25, were attacked with bricks and stones.

Johannesburg police spokesman Sergeant Sefako Xaba said the survivor told the police he and his companion were assaulted in Soweto and dumped in the veld in Naturena, south of Johannesburg.

The 23-year-old is in a serious condition under police guard at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder or the assault. Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened.

l A 23-year-old man died in hospital yesterday after being assaulted by angry residents of Tembisa.

East Rand police spokesman Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the man had allegedly been caught red-handed breaking into a shack.

Opperman said: "The community gave chase and captured the man."

He was assaulted with bricks and stones.

Policemen patrolling the area spotted the incident and rescued the man from the mob.

The man was rushed to hospital, where he died.

Opperman said no one was arrested and a case of murder had been opened.
