An array of top South African runners will take part in the yearly Dis-Chem Pharmacies Half-Marathon in Bedfortview on January 14.

This is an explosive yearly road running event used by the majority of runners to get back into shape after the festive season holidays.

Nikki Loubser, race director, said they were expecting 5 000 runners to take part in the half-marathon, which is regarded as one of Gauteng's premier events.

There will also be a 5km Imodium Melt Dash in a move aimed at accommodating beginners or those preferring shorter distances.

"The half-marathon will be a pre-entry event and will be limited to 5 000 people on a first come, first served basis," said Loubser.

Following the death of one of its members, Dr Joe Mendoza last year, Bedfordview Athletics Club has come up with an safety awareness campaign.

The campaign will be known as "Be Seen, Be Safe", where runners are urged to buy a luminous clip-on band, arm or leg safety band from pharmacies.

The giant pharmaceutical company, who has been sponsoring the half-marathon for the past six years, will donate R5 from every sale to the Joe Mendoza Fund.

Mendoza was knocked down by a car while preparing himself for the Comrades Marathon.

Stan Goetsch of the sponsors said they introduced the "Road Running Safety Campaign" because the rising number of runners knocked down by cars.

Some of the top runners expected to take part include Shadrack Hoff, Dimakatso Morobi, Vladimir Kotov, Abner Chipu, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula, Fusi Nhlapo. George Mofokeng as well as Poppy Mlambo will also be taking part.
