A 37-year-old man appeared in court yesterday accused of killing his wife and burying her in a shallow grave, Pretoria police said.
Police spokesman Constable Brenda Kgafela said the Acacia police were called to a house in Soshanguve on Wednesday last week.
The police found no one at the house and nothing looked suspicious, so they left.
The following day, the accused's sister-in-law was at the house and felt something was amiss. She called the police to file a kidnapping charge after the husband could not account for his wife's whereabouts.
"The police went back to the house on Saturday and a search led to the discovery of blood stains in the man's car."
The husband was arrested and confessed to killing his 34-year-old wife with an axe.
He is believed to have buried her on top of a grave at Winterveldt Cemetery after removing the top soil from the grave.
Police found the body of a woman yesterday.
The man was charged with kidnapping and murder in the Pretoria magistrates' court.
The case was postponed to Tuesday for a formal bail application, Kgafela said.- Sapa
