Traffic blitzes in the Eastern Cape netted 107 drivers allegedly drunk at the wheel over the New Year long weekend.
Arrive Alive yesterday reported that four people died and 50 were injured on the province's roads.
Two of the fatalities were on Friday, when a Toyota Prado collided with a Toyota Raider between Mthatha and Mqanduli. Five passengers were seriously injured.
In an accident between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a passenger was killed and four others were injured when the vehicles in which they were travelling collided.
In an accident in Mdantsane, seven passengers were seriously injured when two minibus taxis collided on New Year's Day.
At least 90 of the drunken motorists were arrested in the Buffalo City municipal district, which comprises East London, and King William's Town and surrounding areas.
Police in the Eastern Cape arrested 80 drunk drivers at the weekend.
A police spokesman, Superintendent Mtati Tana, said some of the offenders were still in police custody and that others were freed after paying R1000 bail.
Most of the allegedly drunk drivers appeared in court yesterday.
