The Bapedi ba ga Sekhukhune in Limpopo are mourning the death of Ryan Thulare Sekhukhune III.

Sekhukhune died a week ago after a short illness. The day before he died he celebrated his 60th birthday.

Royal spokesman Dimo Morwamoche said Sekhukhune died at the Montana Hospital in Pretoria.

He had first been admitted to the Johannesburg hospital.

Sekhukhune suffered complications as a result of diabetes, said Morwamoche.

He said that at the time of his death the royal family had been eagerly awaiting the release of the report of the Nhlapo commission to resolve the kingship dispute that had troubled the Bapedi kingdom for many years.

Sekhukhune and his half-brother, Kenneth Kgagudi, pictured, had been in dispute over who should rule the Bapedi. The latter was installed as interim ruler pending the outcome of the commission's investigation. The commission is expected to release its report before the end of the month.

Sekhukhune leaves four wives and 14 children.
