Tribalism be damned

A recent statement by Cosatu's president Willie Madisha to Sasco members that tribalism must be condemned should be the starting point in the debate about this issue.

A recent statement by Cosatu's president Willie Madisha to Sasco members that tribalism must be condemned should be the starting point in the debate about this issue.

I believe that he was indirectly telling us that he is a victim of ethnicity within Cosatu.

What triggered the pronouncement? Pressure from the labour federation members? Perhaps the nation needs to look at this issue and debate it.

I agree with Madisha that tribalism must not determine the future of the country.

Desmond Tutu, in a lecture at UCT, said that tribal factions would tear this country apart.

We need to guard against such barbaric thoughts and practices. In the end, people will be voting for leaders based on their tribe.

Tribalism is an old demon and Madisha is actually saying let's debate and address this problem while it is in its infancy.

It is high time this issue was dealt with.
