SA envoy Maseko passes on

South Africa's high commissioner to Namibia, Tim Maseko, died of a heart attack in a Johannesburg clinic on Sunday, the minister of foreign affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said yesterday.

South Africa's high commissioner to Namibia, Tim Maseko, died of a heart attack in a Johannesburg clinic on Sunday, the minister of foreign affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said yesterday.

Maseko was previously South Africa's ambassador to Bulgaria, to Ghana and to Chile.

He was the ANC's chief representative in Denmark in the 1980s.

He was director of the ANC Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College in Mazimbu, Tanzania, from 1980 to 1988.

Maseko served in the underground structures of the ANC in Swaziland.

"Death has once again robbed our country and its people of a cadre in our efforts to create a better South Africa in a better Africa and a better world," said Dlamini-Zuma.

"The Maseko family can draw inspiration from the knowledge that Tim Maseko lived life to the fullest, having enjoyed the fruits of his labour to create a better life for all South Africans.

"On behalf of President Thabo Mbeki, the government and the people of South Africa, we share in the pain and sorrow of the Maseko family and extend our heartfelt condolences to them." - Sapa
