The Eastern Cape Transport Department will make an application in the Mthatha high court today to seize six vehicles impounded from allegedly drunk drivers over the festive season.

Department spokesman Tshepo Machae told Sowetan yesterday thattraffic officers had arrested 140 motorists in the province since Christmas.

Machae said the motorists whose vehicles were impounded were repeat offenders or had been caught driving well over the speed limit.

Among those arrested was a senior police officer based at Harding in KwaZulu-Natal. He was released on R1500 bail.

Machae also said 41 buses, mostly from Western Cape and Gauteng, had been pulled off the road after they were found to have serious defects.
