KwaZulu-Natal's education department has warned pupils to be responsible when they celebrate their matric results.
This comes after a Durban matriculant, Mohammed Yazim Khan, was killed just hours after he had found out that he had passed.
Khan, 18, was with two other occupants when a car in which he was a passenger rolled and crashed into a bridge yesterday morning.
The three were among hundreds of matriculants who braved the night and camped near the shops to buy the newspaper and found they had passed.
Education spokesman Christi Naude urged pupils to be especially careful when they celebrate. She said passing your matric and dying was more hurtful to parents than any other scenario.
Superintendent Gugu Sabela said that after getting the paper they drove home to celebrate and, while on their way, the driver failed to negotiate a corner properly and crashed the car into a bridge.
"It was just after 1.20am when the car hit the bridge at the intersection of Inanda and Sea Cow Lake roads. Khan was trapped inside the car and the girl is in critical condition," said Sabela.
Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesman, said that when they arrived at the scene a male student was trapped inside the car and that he was already dead.
"We suspect that the car might have been travelling at a high speed because it rolled before hitting the other side of the bridge," he said.
An 18-year-old girl was taken to St Augustine's Hospital in a critical condition while the driver was taken to McCord Hospital in a serious condition.
