Goodbye 2006, welcome 2007

I can't believe that it's time to say goodbye to 2006. I've given praise where it was due and criticised where it was warranted, for the good of our industry and country.

I can't believe that it's time to say goodbye to 2006. I've given praise where it was due and criticised where it was warranted, for the good of our industry and country.

One of best pieces of news we heard this year was about the coming to South Africa of the huge Lion King production for the first time.

For those lucky enough to feature in it, imagine the prestige it will give them and what it will do for their CVs.

Then there were our music artists criss-crossing the length and breadth of the world.

Thandiswa Mazwai's career peaked after she featured at Midem, and Simphiwe Dana and Lucky Dube signed potentially lucrative contracts with Warner Brothers International.

The house music cats also surprised many after their music had been given a cold reception. A lot of them dropped brilliant CDs.

Today everybody is talking about Tuks Senganga, HHP, ProVerb, 985, Teargas, Jub Jub, Flabba, Zubz and DJ Sbu, all of whom gave us piping-hot CDs.

Feeling the crown slipping away from them, kwaito artists also pulled their socks up.

As a result, we got exciting releases from kwaito "Godfaddas" Mandoza and Arthur, joined by scorching hot proteges such as L'vovo, S'gonondo and Brickz. And who could forget Mgarimbe's thumping though vulgar Sister Bethina?

Sadly, we lost Tsakani "TK" Mhinga, Jabu Khanyile and Lebo Mathosa. Oleseng, who was involved in a car accident, is still fighting for recovery.

As far as I am concerned, until artists treat their careers as jobs, they will get nowhere. Taking drugs is self-defeating.

Think of all the people you are disappointing, especially yourself. Long after you've become a hobo, your suppliers and sober-minded peers will still be around while you'll have been long forgotten.

Let's thank God for our health this year and pray for an even better 2007. May His love shine on mother Africa. Let the bad that bedevilled her pass with 2006 and her children dazzle like the stars they are, or kanjani
