Two top KwaZulu-Natal boys scooped awards for 100percent pass rates in Maths and Science.
The boys, from Umlazi Township, south of Durban, were presented with awards yesterday at a ceremony at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.
Linda Gcaba, of Umlazi Comtech School, and Khulekani Nhlumayo, of Velabahleke High School, scored full marks in the two subjects considered most difficult.
Planning ahead is Gcaba's secret. He said he began teaching himself the matric syllabus while he was still in grade 11.
"By the time I began my grade 12, everything was like a revision process to me.
Gcaba passed with distinctions in all his seven subjects.
He was offered a bursary by Telkom to study computer engineering with the University of KwaZulu-Natal or with the University of Cape Town next year.
Hlumayo, who comes from a disadvantaged family, got three other distinctions in science, accounting and biology.
Hlumayo and Gcaba were part of a study group in Umlazi.
"The study group helped me a lot. My family is proud of my achievements and this is only the beginning," said Hlumayo who stays with his sisters.
