Bernard Mtshali, Moroka Swallows' manager, is concerned about the Birds' poor run and has promised to go into the market to reinforce the squad.
Though the side ended the year with a convincing 2-0 league win, Mtshali said they were shaky in defence and lacking aggression up front.
"We are looking at a quality striker and two defenders to beef up the squad. We're waiting for the [transfer] window period to open and see which players are available," said Mtshali. "The league is going to be tough and we want to see ourselves in a better position.
"It's not enough to be on seventh spot, we have to challenge for the league championship this season. We have not won the league title for a long time, it's time for us to show our grit."
Mtshali said they encountered problems in the season following injuries and suspensions, and believes that a bigger squad will help alleviate this problem.
He said a striker would complement Mame Niang and Evans Gwekwerere up front. The defenders will also come in handy to replace Mahomed Auseb, who is injured, and George Hummel, who had an operation.
The Birds meet Black Leopards in their opening game of the new year at Germiston Stadium on January 7.
"Leopards will be our first prey on the day. The players are aware that winning the league championship is an honour and we're determined to stage a great fight in the new year."
Ajax Cape Town host Benoni Premier United at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Friday, January 5. On Saturday, January 6, Lamontville Golden Arrows meet log leaders and the Telkom Knockout kings Silver Stars at Chatsworth Stadium.
