10-year-old Jewel Dlamuka, who was mistakenly shot by her friend, who is also 10, is still in the intensive care unit at Durban's Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital.

Jewel, of eMachobeni at Inanda, north of Durban, was shot in the chest last Wednesday. The two children were playing together when the incident happened.

Jewel was taken to a local clinic but was transferred to Mahatma Ghandi Hospital and later to Albert Luthuli Hospital because of the seriousness of her injury.

Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital's spokesman John Thusi yesterday said Jewel would remain in the ICU until she recovered.

The father of the alleged shooter has denied that the weapon used in the shooting belonged to him.

He maintains his daughter told him that it was Jewel who brought a firearm with her, saying she had found it in the bushes and she mistakenly shot herself.

Jewel's mother, Sindiswa Mdutshana, 34, maintains that her injured daughter is innocent.
