By yesterday afternoon almost 1 000 people had already lost their lives in road accidents since the beginning of the festive season.

Traffic officials are now bracing themselves for more carnage as reckless drivers wreak havoc on the roads.

Gauteng topped the accidents list at 194, and fears are this will rise dramatically.

It does not seem as if efforts to reduce accident deaths are making any impact. We have to work out new strategies to stop the senseless killings, many of which are caused by speeding, drunken driving and fatigue.

We have a relatively good road network and vehicles in relative good shape. Of course we shouldn't only be raising awareness during holidays, but all year round.
