Former Bafana Bafana captain Steve Komphela, pictured, is expected to resign as full-time coach of the under-23 national side to return to club football.
He was approached by struggling Castle Premiership side Maritzburg United, who parted ways with Serbian Kosta Papic two weeks ago after a string of poor results.
United were also reported to be chasing Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane before Komphela agreed to guide the team, who are under pressure to start delivering or face relegation.
Ngubane resigned from Black Leopards two weeks ago.
Komphela, who could not be reached for comment, flew to Durban at the weekend where the deal was finalised with club chairman Farouk Kadodia to start the job with immediate effect.
"The man wanted to resign as early as yesterday. He wants to start preparing the team for their first Premiership match of 2007 [against Bidvest Wits University on January 6]," said a reliable source.
"Steve and I spoke about the matter but we expect him to inform us in writing. For now we are focusing on the two international friendly matches against Lesotho in Maseru," said Safa director of national teams Barney Kujane.
