Many of our people, particularly those at the coalface of service delivery, do not care whether service is delivered by the premier, the minister, the MEC or the executive mayor. All they want is decent and quality service.
Residents of Cape Town want decent service delivery, and they are prepared to pay for it irrespective of who or which political party is in charge of the city or province.
We have too many governments in one country and it is not working for us.
There is a need for the ruling party to urgently consider reviewing the current national, provincial and local government configuration.
We currently have more than 250 local governments, nine provincial governments and one national sphere of government with more than 20 national departments.
If you add up each provincial and national department, agencies and the duplication thereof, the number is just mind-boggling.
The taxpayers' money that is being used to maintain so many layers of glorified homelands' in different formats should rather be used wisely to develop our people and to provide free education from grade 1 to university level.
It should be used to provide for basic human needs and so on rather than on maintaining territorial turfs.
I personally would prefer to live in a country where there is only one centralised national government without provincial and local governments, with election of national assembly representatives based on aconstituency system. We can save lots of money by having one government and accelerate decent service delivery.
