A Limpopo hospital superintendent, who also works as a medical doctor, is due to appear in court this morning after he was arrested at the weekend for allegedly raping a patient.
The alleged incident occurred at the Malamulele Hospital in Giyani where the patient went to see a doctor at the weekend.
The provincial Health and Social Development Department yesterday confirmed the alleged incident, saying the 22-year-old patient had told them she had gone to the doctor's rooms for a check-up and was subsequently raped.
Departmental spokesman Sophy Sekole could not confirm whether the doctor had used a condom or not, saying their investigation had not yet reached that point.
Sekole also said the issue of whether the doctor had used threat or force would form part of their investigations.
The patient was not admitted to the hospital.
It is reported that the woman went straight to the Malamulele police station after the alleged incident where she laid a rape charge against the superintendent.
"At this stage we are conducting an in-depth probe to get to the bottom of the matter," said Sekole.
"Most of the questions cannot be answered in light of the fact that there is a parallel criminal investigation into the matter."
She said the doctor in question had been working at the hospital for almost two years.
"We view this allegation in a very serious light. We are going to immediately institute internal investigations to determine what actually transpired on that day. Our investigations will determine the way forward on our side," Sekole said.
Mopani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said they had gathered enough evidence, but that the investigations were ongoing.
"This evidence connects the suspect with the alleged crime.
"We hope our investigations will answer some of the issues which will be used as evidence."
