A total of 5412 motorists were trapped speeding by cameras on Christmas Day, said Johannesburg Metro Police.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the motorists were photographed on the M1, M2, N1 and N3 freeways in the city. All are 120kmh zones.

"The average speed of these cars was 145kmh," said Minnaar.

He said they would face fines of about R600 each.

"Today's operation was in support of the Arrive Alive campaign, which gives an indication that there is still a huge percentage of cars that travel in excess of the speed limit." - Sapa
