Three Limpopo radio stations - Thobela, Phalaphala and Mughana-Lonene FM - have handed out food parcels to orphaned children, the elderly and disabled as part of an effort to fight hunger among poverty-stricken families in the province.

This happened last week at Shihosani village outside Malamulele.

The aid came after the SABC had identified three hospice centres in need of help. The centres are Tondalushaka in Venda, Praktiseer in Burgersfort, and the Nkulani Old Age Home and Centre for the Disabled in Malamulele.

Moses Netshitangani, the SABC's communications manager in Limpopo, said the SABC had declared the year "a year of total citizen empowerment".

"We came here to understand their experiences so that we could determine the kind of help we could offer," he said.

Maria Pataka, a teacher and founder of the Nkulani centre, thanked the SABC for its help.

She said she often had to use her own money to help the centre's residents.

N'wa-juwele Maswanganyi, a grandmother, was over the moon when she received a bucketful of groceries. She also applauded the good work done by the SABC.
