The Bushbuckridge municipality in Mpumalanga has injected R60000 into sports development by staging a soccer tournament that started on Tuesday.

Zondi Mkhabela, spokesman for executive mayor Milton Morema, said they envisage making the tournament a yearly event. It is in its first year.

"To show our seriousness for developing sport in the area, we have established a sports council that will deal with facilitating it [the tournament]," said Mkhabela.

The Bushbuckridge area has unearthed SuperSport United marksman Katlego Mashego and Mamelodi Sundowns' stalwart defender Michael Manzini.

Jabu Nzima, Cadbusha local football association chairman, said teams from the seven counties under the association will be competing for the R5000 prize. The final will be on December 28.
