To reduce the high volume of motorists and pedestrians on roads in Mpumalanga, the department of roads and transport has introduced the Top 16 soccer tournament in the Nkomazi region, near Malelane.
Dubbed "Cabulela Ekhaya" (Drink at home), the tournament, which ends on December 26, is aimed at keeping people at home.
David Nkambule, head of communication in the department, said people tend to drive long distances and walk around if they have nothing to do.
Patson Mashele, chairman of the Nkomazi local football association, said: "The standard of football in this area is very high and youngsters need encouragement like this."
