After consulting with their lawyers, SuperSport United decided yesterday not to appeal against the punishment meted to coach Pitso Mosimane and goalkeeper Andre Arendse by the PSL Disciplinary Committee for their attack on assistant referee Godfrey Selopetsa.
The two charged at the official and abused him after their 1-0 loss to Black Leopards two weeks ago.
On Monday night Mosimane was slapped with a R100 000 fine, with R70 000 payable immediately and R30 000 suspended. Arendse was fined R30 000, half of which was suspended.
"I'm disappointed about the judgement, which to me is harsh, very outrageous," said United's chief executive Stan Matthews yesterday.
"I believe in consistency and we want to be treated equally. Probably they are using our guys as examples."
Matthews had considered appealing against the judgment earlier in the day but he called last night to say they had decided otherwise.
Arendse has been banned for six months from all football activities, five months of which was suspended.
Mosimane has been banned from all football activities for 12 months, with 10 months suspended. He will effectively serve a two-month ban.
He was ordered to attend an anger management course and submit evidence of attendance and completion to the league, "failing which the above-mentioned suspension will be activated", said Trevor Phillips, the PSL chief executive.
Both Mosimane and Arendse must furthermore make personal apologies to the assistant referee and to the public via the official PSL website and SuperSport United's website.
The incident happened after their Castle Premiership match against the triumphant Black Leopards at Thohoyandou Stadium a fortnight ago.
"United have also been charged vicariously because they have to take responsibilities for the behaviour of their employees," said PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu, after the club was fined R20 000.
Mosimane and Arendse went berserk and had to be restrained by assistant coach Thomas Madigage, Leopards' boss David Thidiela and the police.
Phillips was asked why Jomo Sono was not hauled before the DC after showing his middle finger in a game against Orlando Pirates.
"We can only take action against a person if there is a report from the referee or the fourth official. We have not received any," he said.
