Few students would want to follow the dangerous example of the schoolteacher-turned-robber who was killed after robbing a filling station in Mpumalanga this week.

This besides the fact that crime does not pay - as the Thulamahashe teacher so tragically discovered.

True teaching is not one of the best-paying professions in South Africa and so attracts fewer applicants. But this is not a justification for anyone, including the teacher, to turn to crime.

Like nursing, teaching is a noble profession offering no trappings of the kind witnessed in the corporate world. It remains something of a calling that requires dedication and hard work for paltry pay.

But many still find the profession fulfilling and rewarding despite these conditions.
