While most of the top coaches are on holiday with their families, Michael "Sponge" Seme is hard at work assisting athletes prepare for the 2007 season.

Seme has once again organised an intensive open training camp at the Vaal University of Technology which is being attended by 31 athletes.

It started on December 4 and will end on Sunday.

Seme started with the camp three years ago to assist athletes to prepare for the new season.

"We all know that people tend to relax this time of the season because of the festive season holidays , they eat a lot of food with fat," said Seme.

"We also teach them about nutrition. I thought it would be a good thing to organise a camp where we would take those attending through their paces.

"It is for sprints and middle-distance events. The camp has proved to be a popular event with more people attending annually.

"We have 31 people attending this year, including an athlete from Port Elizabeth [Marnus Johnson], who is already planning a similar camp in his area."

Steven Mokoka, who will represent the country at the Southern Africa Cross-Country Championships in Malawi in February, is among those attending.
