The reigning Mpumalanga Vodacom men's league champions, Barberton City Stars, have parted ways with coach Galiel "Gallo" Pelwan on a "mutual agreement", their publicist, Sipho "SpyKos" Nkosi, said.

Pelwan, who joined Stars at the beginning of the season, has been missing from the Stars bench for the last last three games.

"The team and the coach reached a stage whereby we decided to part ways on a mutual agreement," said Nkosi.

"It disturbs us to find rumours circulating that we booted the coach out.

"At first the coach had no written agreement with the team. He came to offer his assistance on a voluntary basis and we agreed to have the right to withdraw this agreement at any time when it was no longer needed - and for that matter, that is what we did," added Nkosi.

Pelwan was not available for comment yesterday.

Nkosi has confirmed that former Ria Stars player Patrick "Bazooka" Phiri will return to take over the coaching reins.

Phiri guided Stars to the league title last season.

Meanwhile, Stars were held to a 1-all draw by FC Spurs on Saturday.
